Native-script names vs romanized names

Roman letters can help someone read a name, but they often cannot tell someone how the name sounds in its original language.

Romanization is an approximation

A romanized name is often a lossy bridge between writing systems. It can drop tones, merge sounds, or hide phonemes that are obvious in the original script.

  • The same roman spelling can map to different pronunciations.
  • Tone, stress, and vowel quality may disappear in romanized text.
  • Native script gives better context for the intended pronunciation.

The SayMyName model

SayMyName keeps each language form independently playable, so the listener can hear the exact version they need instead of guessing from a label.

  • One person can have multiple name variants.
  • Each variant can use its own script and language code.
  • Each variant can point to real-human audio or AI fallback audio.
