Overview

SayMyName helps people hear names in their own languages. You can use the app without an account, or sign in to keep your name card, names and lists together across web, iPhone and Android. We do not use your information for advertising or cross-app tracking.

What we store

  • Without an account, your names, lists, settings and unsaved photos stay on this device unless you share them. Signing in adds eligible device data to your account.
  • When you sign in with Google, Apple or X, we receive your account details and, when available, your name, email and profile photo. We never receive your password.
  • We save your account's name card, names, lists and sharing permissions online. Changes and deletions sync across your devices when they connect.
  • Photos are optional. We use your social profile photo when available. You can choose a different photo for your card or a list entry; without a photo, we use an illustrated avatar. Saved photos are stored privately with hidden image details removed.
  • Voice recording is optional and needs microphone permission. Drafts stay on your device until saved. Saved recordings are stored privately with the name and language. You can type names and play pronunciations without microphone access.

Sharing and access

  • Anyone with a shared card, name or list link can view its contents, including photos and recordings. Lists are view-only by default; contribution invitations allow the actions described on the list.
  • A photo or recording link lets its holder view or play that item, but does not let them edit your names or manage your list.
  • Shared copies may keep the version you shared. Deleting your account removes the shares and lists you own, but cannot recall copies others saved or downloaded, copies on offline devices, or older links with copied names built in. Contact us with an older anonymous share link if you need help removing it.
  • Name cards work differently. When someone saves your shared card, or you add yourself to a list with it, they see your card as it is now, and later changes to your name, photo, languages and recordings reach them automatically. If your card stops being public or is deleted, they keep the last version they saw, without your recordings. Anyone who saved your card can detach it to keep their own editable copy; detached copies stop updating and never include your recordings.

How we use your information

  • We use service providers to handle sign-in, store your saved content and keep your library in sync. Sign-in services may also process contact details, device and network information, approximate location, usage and error reports under their own privacy policies.
  • To play a pronunciation, we send the name and language to a pronunciation service. Depending on availability, you may hear a human recording, an AI voice or your device's speech.
  • To protect and improve the app, we collect basic device, connection and usage information, such as approximate location (country, region or city, estimated from your network connection), where you found the app, and pronunciation activity. We do not request your precise location.
  • Explore shows recently played names with an approximate place. A city appears only when several people played from it; otherwise we show only the region or country. We never show who played a name.
  • Usage reports use codes instead of names, but are not fully anonymous. We do not record browsing sessions or automatically capture clicks. Browser reports leave out page addresses and titles that could contain names or share links.
  • We do not sell your personal data or use it for advertising or tracking across apps.

Shared-content safety

  • Our content rules apply when you save or share online. Only share names, photos and recordings you have permission to use. Harassment, hate, sexual content, graphic violence, child exploitation and sharing private information without consent are prohibited.
  • You can report shared content and block its creator through a shared preview or Content & safety. Blocks sync when signed in. Older anonymous links can only be blocked individually; blocking does not erase saved copies.
  • Reports are reviewed privately. We keep the affected link, reason and any details you provide. Report text is removed after 90 days; information needed to enforce a restriction may remain while it is in place. Account deletion removes your reports, blocks and acceptance records. Contact us for a review or appeal, and do not include passwords or unnecessary personal details.

Retention and deletion

  • Your account content stays until you delete it or your account. Guest data stays on the device until removed. Uninstalling the app or clearing your browser does not delete your online account.
  • Choose Delete account in Me or use the link below, then sign in again to confirm. Your account closes when the request is accepted. If a service is unavailable, remaining cleanup is retried; the confirmation page shows its progress.
  • Deletion removes your account, cards, names, lists and shares you own, and ends your saved sign-ins. Access to your recordings is withdrawn. Stored photos are erased when no independent saved copy still uses them.
  • A deletion receipt without your content is kept for 30 days. A limited account reference is kept for 7 days to prevent an old sign-in from accidentally recreating your account.
  • Backup copies may remain until the backups are replaced or removed, but are not available through the app. Any recovery from a backup must respect later deletion requests.
  • AI-generated pronunciation audio may be kept for up to 60 days, and usage records for 90 to 180 days. We do not keep copies of outside human recordings without permission. Service logs are kept for a limited period to operate and protect the app.

Your choices

  • Sign-in, photos and voice recording are optional.
  • In Lists, remove names, delete lists or stop sharing lists you own.
  • Manage your account in Me. Signing out does not delete your account data.
